About the Role:

This hands-on role focuses on delivering compliance monitoring and investigations related to land use across the Tasman region. Working in a small, dedicated team, you'll help ensure the TRMP and environmental legislation are followed through consent monitoring, incident response and complaint investigations.

The work is varied and practical from reviewing environmental management plans and monitoring complex developments, to resolving a wide range of rule breaches through pragmatic engagement with the public.

About You:

  • Experience in either an environmental, scientific or technical field (such as environmental science, resource management or similar) or a background in regulation, compliance, investigations or enforcement ideally within a public sector or regulatory environment
  • A genuine interest in environmental protection and a willingness to learn and grow your technical and legislative knowledge on the job
  • Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with a wide range of people, including the ability to have balanced, respectful conversations in challenging or confrontational situations
  • A pragmatic, solution‑focused mindset able to assess risk, apply sound judgement and achieve fair, proportionate outcomes
  • A collaborative approach and strong team fit, with the ability to work well alongside others and contribute positively to a small, close‑knit team
  • Good written skills and the ability to document findings clearly and accurately
  • A tertiary qualification in environmental science, resource management, investigations or a related field is an advantage, but equivalent practical experience in compliance or regulatory work is also valued.

What to expect after you apply

Once the vacancy closes you'll be contacted within 7 days as to whether or not your application has been successful.  If you've been shortlisted for an interview, you'll be contacted by one of the People & Wellbeing team to arrange a time to come in and meet with some of the team. 

We typically only do one interview, however depending on the seniority of the role or the role itself, we sometimes require two interviews.  For mid-senior level and team leader/manager roles, you may also be required to undertake psychometric testing.

In your interview, there will be a member of the People & Wellbeing team, the Hiring Manager and either their Manager or one of the senior member's of their team.  Our interview questions are predominantly behavioural and skills-based.

Summer Student Internships

Every year we employ a number of Summer Students across the Council to work for a period of 12-16 weeks over the summer months (mid-November to February). This is a great opportunity to gain work experience in your field of study, advertising begins early July, All applications are to be submitted via our website in July.
