Fixed Term (3 Years)

Would you like to apply your technical expertise whilst living in a region ripe with outdoor adventure opportunities? Lead network performance improvement, primarily for flood warning.

Based in Richmond, the Tasman District Council are seeking an experienced person with a practical can-do attitude to join the Environmental Monitoring team in a fixed term capacity to assist with the Telemetry Resilience Upgrade of the flood monitoring network.

Great team:

Our Environmental Monitoring team collects high‑quality scientific data that helps Council and our communities live in balance with the environment. We collect scientific data from a range of environments including groundwater, rivers and lakes, sea level, water quality and meteorology

Great opportunity:

Join a skilled technical field team where your initiative and expertise will help drive strong environmental and community outcomes. This role offers the chance to lead network performance improvements and provide specialist technical guidance to a three‑year project aimed at strengthening the resilience of our flood‑monitoring network. You'll play a key role in the design and delivery of network infrastructure upgrades, system improvements and new equipment installations while mentoring others who are developing their monitoring careers.

What we are looking for:

You'll bring at least five years of hydrology experience and hold the NZ Diploma in Field Hydrology (or have equivalent skills and training). You're confident managing the design, construction and operation of monitoring assets as well as being comfortable with electronic equipment such as data loggers, drones, and remote‑control boats.

In this role, you'll lead improvements across the flood‑warning network and also undertake data collection, processing and quality assurance. Your attention to detail ensures the accuracy of data used locally and nationally. The position offers a balance of fieldwork and office‑based tasks.

You'll enjoy working with technology, solving technical challenges and spending time outdoors in varied (sometimes physically demanding) environments. Because of this a good level of fitness and strong swimming ability is essential. You'll thrive both working independently and collaborating with a supportive team, bringing initiative and practical problem‑solving skills to everything you do.

Great perks:

Climate and lifestyle are some of the major factors for people choosing to live and work in the Tasman District. If you love the great outdoors, the Tasman District is next to a stunning collection of national parks, along with plenty of other outdoor action, and has great wines, craft beer and food - the list of attractions is immense.

Our benefits package is unique - you customise it to your preferences to include a combination of extra leave, cash payout, health insurance and additional superannuation contributions. Alongside health insurance and a day off on your birthday too!

Relocation assistance may apply for the successful applicant if based outside the region.

This recruitment is for one vacancy which will be offered with a starting remuneration of either the Environmental Monitoring Officer or Senior level based on the successful candidates experience and capability.

The starting salary for the positions are:

  • Environmental Monitoring Officer - $76,022.10 $84,469.00 + 6.2% benefits
  • Senior Environmental Monitoring Officer - $82,136.70 $91,236.00 + 6.2% benefits
