About the role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Legal Advisor with a passion for making a difference in their community.

As a Senior Legal Advisor you will provide expert legal advice across a broad range of areas including local government law, environmental and resource management, public and administrative law, dispute resolution, litigation, commercial, contract and procurement matters, property law and a whole host of other challenging issues that fall within Council's functions.

About you:

As a qualified and experienced lawyer, you will have exceptional problem-solving skills alongside excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Your ability to work effectively under pressure to apply initiative, good judgement and prioritize tasks efficiently will be key. Additionally, your ability to provide risk based, comprehensive and timely legal advice with an understanding of broader implications is essential.

We especially want to hear from applicants with a background in the Resource Management or environmental law.

Having experience in local or central government will be advantageous but not essential. You must also be eligible to hold a practicing certificate.

You can expect the starting base salary to be within the range of $118,350 - $131,500 and a 7% benefits package entitlement. Remuneration will be based on skills and experience.

What to expect after you apply

Once the vacancy closes you'll be contacted within 7 days as to whether or not your application has been successful.  If you've been shortlisted for an interview, you'll be contacted by one of the People & Wellbeing team to arrange a time to come in and meet with some of the team. 

We typically only do one interview, however depending on the seniority of the role or the role itself, we sometimes require two interviews.  For mid-senior level and team leader/manager roles, you may also be required to undertake psychometric testing.

In your interview, there will be a member of the People & Wellbeing team, the Hiring Manager and either their Manager or one of the senior member's of their team.  Our interview questions are predominantly behavioural and skills-based.

Summer Student Internships

Every year we employ a number of Summer Students across the Council to work for a period of 12-16 weeks over the summer months (mid-November to February). This is a great opportunity to gain work experience in your field of study. Recruitment begins in mid June. All applications must be submitted online via our Vacancies page between mid-June and mid-July each year.

We typically have vacancies in Engineering, Environmental Information (Hydrology, Resource Science and Biosecurity), Information Services and Regulatory (Compliance Monitoring).
